Pediatric Eye Care
It is important to identify vision development issues and eye health problems as early as possible. The American Optometric Association recommends a yearly eye health assessment for all children beginning at six months of age regardless of apparent eye health. Most children are unaware of vision issues and will typically not report a vision problem to a parent or teacher. One of our friendly and experienced doctors will test your child for excessive or unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or strabismus (eye turn).
Certain conditions place children at risk for the development of eye and vision problems and may require additional testing or more frequent re-evaluation. Some of the factors placing an infant, toddler, or child at risk for visual impairment include:
- Prematurity, low birth weight, oxygen at birth
- Family history of retinoblastoma, congenital cataracts, or metabolic or genetic disease
- Infection of mother during pregnancy (e.g., rubella, toxoplasmosis, venereal disease, herpes, cytomegalovirus, or AIDS)
- Difficult or assisted labor, which may be associated with fetal distress
- Known or suspected central nervous system dysfunction evidenced by developmental delay, cerebral palsy, seizures, or hydrocephalus
The doctors and staff at EyeCare Associates of Kentucky are dedicated to improving the health of the communities we serve. One of the programs we participate in is called InfantSEE. By participating in InfantSEE, we pledge to provide a no-cost comprehensive infant eye assessment between 6 and 12 months of age.
Our doctors are pleased to treat children of all ages. Whether your child needs their first eye exam, first pair of glasses, contact lenses or sports goggles, the team at EyeCare Associates is here to help.
